Former school including schoolmaster's house

This is a former school building with an attached schoolmaster's house, dating from the 19th century and built in an Elizabethan style. The design reflects the strong architectural character of the wider Kilvrough estate. The main school building runs east-west, with a large wing projecting to the south, and the entrance situated in the angle where the building joins the wing. A prominent ashlar spire marks the entrance. The building is constructed from local limestone, with a roughly-faced exterior using thin, irregularly-shaped stones set in courses, and dressings of Bath stone. It has steeply pitched slate roofs, with bronze gable finials.

A lower block, the schoolmaster’s house, is situated to the east, extending northwards. The west and south gables, and the main south wall, feature four-light mullion and transom windows with Tudor-shaped heads to each light, and moulded surrounds. There are small quatrefoil openings above these windows. The gables have coped edges with finials and decorative kneelers, and stone quoins. Larger, simpler mullion and transom windows are found on the north elevation.

The spire is octagonal, projecting beyond an octagonal base which has narrow, pointed arched openings. It rises from a square porch with broaches, and topped with a bronze finial. Tudor-arched doorways are located on the south and west sides.

The schoolmaster’s house has dormer windows with carved bargeboards to the east, south, and west elevations. A canted bay window faces south, and the house also has mullion and transom windows. A timber-framed porch stands on low stone walls.
