Description
The railings and area walls at Plas-y-Coed and Park Villa are a notable example of 19th-century design, likely built in 1874, with later additions. The area wall is constructed from rubble stone and features decorative wrought iron railings that are locally made and distinctive in character. The wall is whitewashed and low, with slate coping, and is stepped to create two levels, with the lower section to the north running continuously along the street line in front of the gardens of both properties.
There are evenly spaced gaps for entrances to each property, flanked by stone walling and stone steps. The railings are particularly striking, featuring oversized scrolls between two horizontal bars. The upper bars are adorned with small spearheads, alternating with double miniature scrolls that are inverted to the outer scrolls. The end-piers, which are a later addition, are tall, squared, and stuccoed, topped with projecting cornices and pyramidal caps made of quartz rubble. The northern pier is dated 1922.
