Description

Vale View is a house constructed of unpainted stucco with a slate eaves roof and small 20th-century brick end stacks. It has a T-plan layout and features a formal frontage of two storeys with a five-window range, highlighted by a prominent large wooden modillion cornice at the eaves. The centre of the house has a square-headed, panelled timber door, which is sheltered by a gabled thin timber porch that has a decorated barge board, a miniature collar truss, and a central pendant. The house retains remarkable original 18-pane sash windows with flush frames and stone sills, along with cast iron rainwater goods.

The left gable end is primarily constructed of rubble stone, with some repairs and refacing in red brick, while the right end is rendered and painted. There is a long, lower rear wing set to the west of centre, made of rubble stone and topped with a slate roof, featuring a large external stone stack on the south gable end. This stack has a rendered shaft and a corniced head, and the first-floor opening to the west has a timber lintel. The east side includes a 20th-century pointed-headed window.

Although not available for inspection, earlier descriptions note the original open string staircase with elegantly turned balusters and ramped handrails. The parlour is described as having large fielded panels and a heavy, moulded stucco cornice, with similar panels in the bedroom above. An unusual feature includes verses inscribed on some of the window panes, dating from 1747 to 1778, written by John Blome in memory of his wife's untimely death in 1747. These verses reference classical mythology, scripture, and likely contemporary poetry.
