Description
This is an urban style chapel, dating from the 18th century. It is rendered with a slate roof and tile ridge, and features a small brick chimney attached to a rear annex. The front elevation is finished with stucco and painted white, incorporating sandstone window sills. The main entrance consists of twin pine doors, each with six panels and prominent moulding, topped by fanlights with decorative glazing bars. The lower windows have low, cambered tops with fixed lights of six panes and margins. A heavy label mould with keystones connects these openings. The upper windows are round-headed, similarly linked by a label mould, with a string course connecting the sills. The upper windows have ten panes plus margins, with some featuring additional timber tracery. Two round vents and the chapel name are positioned above the windows, accompanied by rusticated quoins. The side elevations have sash windows with eight panes plus margins; the upper storey is round-headed while the lower is segmental, linked by a string course. Patterned glass is incorporated into the margin panes.
A porch with twin panelled doors provides access to the chapel and has windows with margin glazing and obscured glass. Inside, the chapel features four ranges of pews, a gallery on three sides, and a fine pine pulpit. The gallery is supported by seven decorative cast-iron columns with fluted shafts and simplified Corinthian capitals, and a moulded support-beam with dentils and brackets. The gallery front has balusters above boarding and a heavily moulded handrail, with three rows of seating on the sides and five rows at the rear, incorporating curved corners. Similar pine seating is found on the chapel floor, with two passageways. The front of the side block seating turns inwards towards the pulpit. A boarded dado features quatrefoil sinkings in the frieze, complemented by six-panel doors at the end wall. The pulpit mirrors the gallery's detail but includes an extra dentil course below the cornice, with canted corners and a prominent base moulding over diagonally boarded panels. Twin stairs incorporate turned and carved newels with knob finials. A screen matching the gallery’s balusters and newels extends the ‘sedd fawr’, with seating in front of the pulpit and along the sides. A plaster arch, moulded and keyed and resting on fluted pilasters with eight panels, forms a prominent feature behind the pulpit. A marble memorial slab, shaped like a sarcophagus, is dedicated to the Rev William Bowen, the minister when the chapel was built.
