Description
Glynhir Ice House is a 19th-century structure located near the Loughor River, which likely provided the ice for its use. The approach to the ice house is via a stone-revetted hollow way. It features a low doorway with a cambered head, although the doors have not survived.
The dome's stonework is mostly intact, except for the circular keystone or grating at the top. However, there is significant root damage to both the dome and the roof of the passage leading to it.
Inside, the ice house contains an egg-shaped chamber made of brick, accessed through a short dogleg passage with doorways that are missing their doors. The chamber has a diameter of about 5 meters and is approximately 4.5 meters deep below the level of the approach passage. It includes iron rungs and has drainage at the bottom, topped by a domed roof.
