Description
18 Market Square is a house in an informal terrace, built in the 18th century. It has three bays and two storeys, topped with a slate gabled roof and rendered chimneys on both the left and right sides. The eaves are narrow and bracketed. The facade is unpainted rendered, which was formerly lined to resemble ashlar, featuring long and short quoins on either side. The outer bays have 12-pane hornless sash windows, while the central bay is blank. The window reveals have keystones.
There is a central recessed six-panel door, which consists of four fielded panels and two flush panels, with panelled reveals and a traceried fanlight above. A moulded course runs from the side piers of the recess under the fanlight. The door surround is plain, with applied pilasters that have entablature blocks and a plain shelf cornice, although the pilasters have been renewed at the base. The stone sills are present, and the right-hand return wall is rendered and windowless.
Inside, there is a dog-leg stair that runs parallel to the front wall, featuring stick balusters, a thin rail, and thin column newels, with scrolled tread ends. The right-hand front room has been altered and includes panelled shutters.
