Description

The HSBC Bank building was originally two houses, one of which is located on the corner with two bays facing east and a canted dormer, while the other has three bays facing north. The structure has been converted into a single unit. It features a slate gabled roof with a canted hipped corner, a rubble stone chimney with an exposed breast to the left of the east-facing section, and a red brick stack on the ridge between the original houses. The eaves are moulded timber, and the facade is painted lined stucco with long and short quoins at all angles.

There is a plinth and thin moulded surrounds to all windows, which are generally sash windows with six panes in the upper half and one pane in the lower half, although the proportions have been altered in the larger ground floor windows. The east-facing section has two close-spaced bays and a door in the canted angle bay. The north-facing section has two windows on the ground floor to the left of the chimney that marks the former divide, and one window on the first floor to the left. To the right, there are two smaller windows and a six-panel door with glazed upper lights, along with two windows above, one over the left window and one over the door. The original house door was presumably central to this section.

The bank's front door, located in the canted angle, consists of six fielded panels with brass fittings and is set in a panelled recess supported by scrolled corbels beneath a pediment, with a blank rectangular tablet above.

Inside, there are earlier 20th-century fittings, including a panelled inner lobby with double half-glazed doors featuring tall side-lights of etched glass and four top lights. The north wall has similar hardwood panelling up to a high dado, with moulded frames around two windows. The east wall has a recess with panels on each side of a later door, and sidelights over the panels. The bank counter has been altered but retains some original woodwork.
