Description
Plas-Newydd Mill is a 19th-century structure featuring significant remnants of its original milling equipment. At the east gable end, there is a large undershot iron wheel, measuring 13 feet (4 meters) in diameter, marked with the foundry stamp 'T Jones Carmarthen'. Above the wheel pit, a small batten door with a timber lintel and stone sill provides access, while the course of a former mill race is visible but now blocked.
The south elevation has a large vertical opening that extends from the floor to the eaves, positioned off-center. To the left, there is a batten door at an upper level, and to the right, a small casement window with a flat stone lintel is located on the ground floor, followed by a door opening and a window opening above, both featuring 20th-century lintels. The ground level rises at the back of the mill, where the north side has one off-center opening at the upper level and another at ground level, both with internal timber lintels.
Inside, the loft floor supports three millstones. Below, remnants of old wooden mill machinery are present, including the axletree of the pit wheel meshed into a smaller wallower wheel mounted on a wooden block. Above the wallower wheel, there is a spur wheel and drive shafts connected to the three millstones, with two mounted at either end of a sturdy timber frame and the third mounted on a separate wooden rail in front. The roof was replaced in the 20th century.
