Description

New Mill is a former corn mill built of rubble in the early 19th century. It has three storeys and an L-shaped plan, featuring pitched, slated roofs and timber lintels over the openings. The front gable end, facing north, includes a small-paned light on the upper storey, a blocked doorway on the first floor, and a ground floor door that has been altered to a window with a 9-pane timber-framed light. The right side wall, facing west, has a small 6-pane light on the first floor near the corner, and a former door in the centre that is now partially blocked with coursed slate rubble beneath a small boarded opening. The right-hand range has a small 6-pane metal-framed light on the upper storey, a 20th-century boarded timber door on the first floor, and a similar, smaller door on the ground floor with a rendered surround and a tall plinth. The gable end to the right is featureless.

The building features plain timber bargeboards and cast iron water goods throughout. The east wall retains an overshot water-wheel made of cast iron, inscribed 'T. Thomas and Son Engineers Cardigan', located beneath two 9-pane lights on the first floor and a similar central light on the upper storey. The arrangement of the waterwheel indicates that there was previously an undershot wheel at this location. There is a long late 20th-century extension to the rear made of unpainted concrete blocks.

Inside, the mill retains its original features, including limewashed stone walls and the gearing system from the early 19th century on the ground floor. The first floor grinding room contains two grindstones, and the top floor retains hoists. All equipment is believed to be in working order. The ground floor includes a lathe shaft with "Made In England" inscribed in raised lettering, along with a wheel for a former stationary engine. There is a blocked window with a timber lintel on the ground floor, and two partly obscured 4-pane casement windows on the top floor at the rear. A modern access door is present on the first floor at the rear, and the timbers and joists appear to be of 19th-century construction. The roof features bolted truss frames.
