Description

The area wall and railings at Closygraig Chapel, including a memorial, were constructed in 1887 by T. Jones and Son from Priory Foundry in Carmarthen. The long terrace wall is made of rubble stone and features decorative cast iron spearhead railings. The wall has rounded cement coping, and the rail sections are divided by taller cast rods with rounded heads above projecting bands. The ironwork displays an interlaced design. This enclosure wall runs roughly north to south in front of the chapel facade. The southern end has a right angle turn to the east, accompanied by a flight of stone steps. There is a small opening at the eastern extremity, next to Chapel House. The northern end of the wall is slightly canted before it turns sharply east.

Paired gates made of painted cast iron, matching the spearheads of the railings, are flanked by massive squared pillars with lozenge-shaped coping that support a large overthrow. Above the center of the gates is a four-sided lantern with a steeply pitched head, terminating in a small ball finial, all crafted in painted cast iron. The wall and railings continue in regular steps, following the sloping ground alongside the chapel to the east.

In front of the chapel entrance stands a four-sided marble memorial set within a dwarf rendered wall that has a coped top and is surrounded by cast iron spearheaded railings. The railings feature Celtic cross and arch motifs, with taller posts at the corners and center points of each side. The monument itself has a large square base with plain sides and an inscription facing west, beneath a projecting band that bears blank shield motifs under arched heads. Above this band, the monument has four tapering sides capped by another projecting band, with an urn on top. The west face is inscribed: "IN MEMORY OF THE REV. J. HARRIS JONES M.A., Ph. D. LATE CLASSICAL TUTOR AT TREVECCA COLLEGE WHO DIED 21ST JULY 1885 AGED 58 YEARS". The design and inscription of the monument were executed by J. Phillips of Talgarth.
