Description
Cilwern is an early 19th-century two-storey house built of rubble, which was formerly whitewashed. It has a slate roof and wooden soffits, with rubble gable chimney stacks that feature stone tabling, slightly wider on the left side. The house has a slightly offset regular facade with three windows, all having cambered heads with stone voussoirs. The first floor contains three 12-pane hornless sash windows, while the ground floor has four-pane sashes, with the left window horned and the right window hornless. The windows have concrete sills. The central door has a similar head to the windows and is framed by a raised plain cemented architrave, featuring a modern boarded stable-type door with a small inset light.
To the left of the house is a stone and timber lean-to garage. The right-hand return elevation has two large modern casement windows that replace former stable and hayloft doors. At the rear, there is a modern timber conservatory. A small loop window to the left of the first floor indicates the location of a former hayloft.
The unusual plan of the house incorporates a stable with a hayloft above, both of which have been converted to residential use. Inside, there is a small inglenook in the left-hand room with a cambered stone voussoired head, and a small recess to the right of the fireplace with a wooden lintel. The ground floor front rooms feature six-panel doors.
