Description
Esgairnant Calvinistic Methodist Chapel was built in 1806 and refitted in 1899. An inscribed tablet on the building reads, "Esgairnant Capel Y Methodistiad Calfiniadd. Adeiladwyd 1806. Ail Adeiladwyd a Helaethwyd 1828. Adgyweiriwyd 1899." The chapel features a lateral rendered facade with raised cemented quoins, a slate roof, and wide bracketed eaves and soffits. It has two central tall round arched windows with Y-tracery, flanked by matching round arched doorways that also have Y-tracery fanlights. Above these, slightly offset, are round arched upper windows with similar tracery. The rear elevation is made of whitewashed rubble and includes two rectangular long windows and a central buttress. To the south, there is a small two-storey vestry with a corner hip-roofed porch.
An attached tablet on the forecourt wall states, "This Chapel was built by the Calvinistic Methodists in the year 1806. Rebuilt and enlarged in 1828."
Inside, the chapel features a three-sided timber gallery with a panelled front, wave-moulded cornice, and an inset clock, all supported by marbled cast-iron columns with foliate capitals. The seating consists of raked pews. Behind the pulpit is an elaborate round-arched plaster surround with fluted Corinthian pilasters and leaf decoration. The raised timber polygonal pulpit is panelled with cuspwork and roundels, and there is a large seat with a half-rail, turned wooden balusters, and newels topped with ball finials.
The interior remains attractive and largely unaltered from the late 19th century.
