Description

Capel Ty'nygwndwn is an Independent chapel built in 1775, rebuilt in 1835, and restored in 1892. The front of the building is painted smooth render, while the other sides are roughcast. It features a slate roof with timber eaves and barges. The lateral facade has four bays with round-arched windows; the two central windows are tall, and there is a shorter window above the door in each outer bay. The glazing from 1892 includes 14-pane long windows and 8-pane windows, with thick central timber mullions and arched upper lights. The windows have slate sills and painted heads. The doors have painted segmental heads, paired boarded doors, and 2-pane overlights. A tablet between the tall windows is inscribed:

"Ty'nygwndwn. O Addoldy yr Annibynwr. Adeiladwyd 1775. Ailadeiladwyd 1835. Adgweirywyd 1892".

On the first floor, there is a 16-pane window at each end. The rear of the building has 12-pane sash windows, two on each storey.

Inside, there is a good gallery from 1861 that runs along three sides, featuring tall rectangular panels and iron columns with simple foliate caps. The pulpit, likely from 1892, is located on the entry wall and has blind cusped panels on colonettes, with curved balustraded sides and end stairs. The newels are square with ball finials. Behind the pulpit, there is a plaster surround with a round-arched head on consoles. The chapel also includes a large seat with a simple panelled surround and 1892 pews. The flat plaster ceiling has a large central rose.
