Description

4 Piccadilly Square is a row of four Victorian estate cottages, built as a mirrored terrace. The cottages are constructed of rubble stone with brick dressings, topped with a slate roof and crested ridge tiles, and feature four red brick chimneys. Each house is two storeys high and has two bays. A casement-pair timber window sits above the front door, under the eaves. The other bay contains a 3-light mullion-and-transom window on each floor; the ground floor window is set within a rendered, rusticated surround with a hoodmould, while the upper window has a timber lintel that breaks the eaves, set under a shallow gable with plain bargeboards and a red terracotta finial. Numbers 1 and 2 have their front door in the right bay, while Numbers 3 and 4 have theirs in the left bay. Each door is sheltered by a slate pent roof supported by carved diagonal braces with Gothic cusping in the triangular area above the braces. Red brick surrounds all window and door openings, except for the ground floor main window. The gable ends have overhanging verges. Later in the 20th century, two of the cottages were significantly altered. Number 4 remains largely in its original condition.
