Description
The outbuildings to the rear of Penycoed are farm buildings constructed from whitewashed rubble stone, topped with slate roofs. This long continuous range includes a barn on the left and two lofted ranges that slope downwards to the west. The barn features two high doors with cambered-arched heads and double boarded doors. The middle building, which may have originally been a lofted stable, has a slightly lower pitched roof with staggered slating, a regional style from the later 19th century. Its loft includes one boarded door on the left and one boarded square window on the right. The ground floor has a window-door-window arrangement with cambered heads in the center, flanked by doors with timber lintels on the extreme left and right (the left door has been converted into a window). There is a straight joint between this range and the third section.
The third range, which serves as a lofted cartshed and outbuilding, has an even lower pitched roof. It features two cambered-arched cart entries on the left, with a square boarded loft light above, followed by a loft door over a window, and then a ground floor door and window, all with cambered heads. The heads of the openings are generally made of stone voussoirs, with some brick, though much of it has been overpainted. The rear of the building is not whitewashed. The center range has staggered slating, a door on the extreme left, and a lean-to on the right. There is also a single-storey range running south at a right angle, likely a cow-shed, which has a window, door, window on the left, and then a door and window, with the windows being square and positioned under the eaves, while the doors have stone voussoirs with cambered heads. The rear of the lower range has a metal-sheeted roof, with the right half built out and featuring one small window. Additionally, a further low range extends south from its southwest corner, consisting of an altered outbuilding and three pig-sties.
The center range has a six-bay collar-truss roof, although the loft floor has been removed.
