Description

Llandeilo Bridge, including its causeways, is a significant stone road bridge built in 1848. It features a single elegant broad arch that spans 44.2 meters and rises to a height of 12.65 meters, with a total length of 110.64 meters. The bridge has a very long abutment on the Ffairfach side and shorter northwest and longer rising northeast abutments on the Llandeilo side. The abutments are made of rubble stone, while the buttresses, copings, and other dressings are crafted from tooled limestone. The arch is adorned with rusticated voussoirs, possibly sandstone, and has incised channelling, with similar channelled stonework on the underside of the arch.

Large flanking buttress piers extend through the parapet, and similar piers flank a segment-headed flood arch on the south abutment, with additional single piers on the Ffairfach abutment. The main arch features a bull-nosed broad stringcourse beneath a rounded grey limestone parapet, while the stringcourse is plain in other areas, and the parapet is made of rubble with limestone ridged coping. The piers have pyramidal caps made of tooled limestone, with the central arch piers being broader and having rebated angles. The stringcourse is also broken forward over the piers. The flood arch is tall and shares similar detailing with the main arch.

Steps lead down to the river from the lower end of Bridge Street in Llandeilo and down to Bridge Farm in Ffairfach. The east parapet is inscribed with 'Erected 1848', while the west side has a blank panel that is believed to have once displayed the name of the architect, Haycock, which was erased due to local demand. There is also a later inscription: 'Pont Llandeilo cymer hon le hen bont saith bwa', along with a 20th-century bronze plaque depicting the old seven-arch bridge.
