Description
St Tyfi's Church, now functioning as an Interpretation Centre, is a small stone church with medieval origins that was largely rebuilt in the late 19th century, possibly designed by R Kyrke Pearson, the architect known for redesigning Newton House for Lord Dynevor. The church features a unified plan of chancel and nave, with a medieval south aisle set back to the left. It includes a west porch, a lean-to south vestry, and a gabled north vestry.
The exterior is composed of rubble facings with freestone dressings and stone slate roofs. It has gable parapets adorned with crucifix finials and twin bellcote openings at the west end, along with a chimney on the east gable of the south aisle. The east elevation showcases three-light perpendicular windows beneath rectangular drips, while the west front features two-light traceried windows under pointed hoods, marked by a vertical masonry joint. The tall south aisle has a blocked pointed doorway, and the west porch is supported by diagonal buttresses, featuring a wide four-centred arch with hoodmoulded nook shafts leading to a four-centred door.
The interior boasts open arched-brace roofs with collar-beams and stone corbels, as well as fretted wall-plates in the chancel. There is a three-bay aisle arcade supported by octagonal piers with hoodmoulds, and pointed boarded doors fitted with strip work hinges. The church is set within a fine, steeply sloping burial ground that contains old headstones.
