Description
Gutto Mill is a two-storey building with an attic and a cross wing at the rear, which was formerly used for maltings. Constructed of stone and topped with slate roofs, the mill features windows that have modern glazing but respect the original openings.
The front of the building has a doorway on the left, which is a camber-headed opening with a boarded door. To the right, there is a square window and a tiny window near the ground. The upper floor has two asymmetrical windows set at the eaves. The left gable end includes a window at attic level and another at first floor level, which may have been a former door, along with a flight of stone steps.
At the rear, the single-storey cross wing has a gabled lantern on the ridge, a large window that was likely a former door, and a tiny window near the ground. The gable end of the cross wing features a small window, and the rear has a lean-to extension.
The right gable end of the main block houses the water wheel, which is of the overshot type and made from a combination of wood and iron, although it is missing its vanes.
Inside, the mill retains its original heavily built roof trusses in both the main block and the cross wing. It also preserves much of its machinery, including an iron pit wheel with wooden teeth that engages with an iron crown wheel on a wooden shaft, transferring power upwards to operate the grinding and hoisting machinery, which contains two sets of millstones, along with wooden hopper chutes.
