Description
The lychgate to the Parish Church of St Cynwyl is a 19th-century structure featuring a gabled front made of squared rock-faced grey sandstone with ashlar dressings. It has a steeply pitched stone-tiled roof, wooden soffits, and projecting bracketed bargeboards that are adorned with carved consoles. The lychgate includes a wide four-centred entry with an ashlar head that has a drip detail. It is fitted with low paired wooden panelled gates that have strap hinges; the upper panels are designed to open with spiral twist iron bars. Above the gates is a square Perpendicular two-light window, which features a label, trefoiled lights, and latticed iron panes. A carved gablet rises above the window, topped with a crucifix. The rear elevation mirrors the front but does not include gates.
In front of the lychgate, there are a pair of earlier square ashlar gate-piers with moulded stone copings that rise to ball finials. A short wide flight of cemented steps leads up to the lychgate.
Inside, the lychgate has a collarbeam roof, a flagstone floor, and stone benches. There are inscribed stone memorial tablets positioned to the left and right.
