Description
The South African War Memorial is a Grade II listed structure featuring a white marble standing figure of a soldier atop a tall pedestal made of Forest sandstone and red Aberdeen granite. The pedestal includes a chamfered plinth with diagonal wings that support large scrolled buttresses leading to a sandstone base with a cornice above. Framing the polished red granite plaque, which reads: "To the honoured memory of her sons who died during the war in South Africa, 1899-1902, Carmarthenshire dedicated this memorial. Gwell Angau na Gwarth," are pink unpolished granite pilasters with sandstone capitals and a deep cornice. The cornice is adorned with a pulvinated frieze and modillions. The statue itself rests on a red granite plinth, with one foot raised on a cannon and a sword held in one hand. Surrounding the base are sandstone obelisk pillars and iron chains.
