Description

This is a large, three-storey commercial building of six bays, with a basement, dating to the 18th century. The upper floors are faced with unpainted roughcast, while the ground floor has painted render. A channelled angle pier marks the right-hand corner, and a sill band runs along the first floor. The building has 20th-century uPVC windows, lacking sills. The top floor has square windows, with three to the left and two to the right, while the first floor has six windows in total. The ground floor features two windows to the left, a central door aligned with the third windows of the upper floors, and a slightly recessed 20th-century plate glass shop front to the right.

Historically, a shared doorway between numbers 37 and 38, featuring a 19th-century doorcase, existed until it was removed before 1981. Two windows would have been located to the right of the doorway. The rendered end walls are visible, and the building lacks chimneys, although an external chimney breast remains on the right-hand side, with a four-pane attic window to its left.

Internally, the building has been altered. A staircase previously mentioned in a provisional list of 1953 had disappeared by 1981. Within number 38, two doors at the foot of the staircase have surrounds dated around 1870, one being half-glazed. The staircase itself is of late 19th-century or early 20th-century design, with a closed string and ornate newels featuring large turned finials.
