Description
This is a group of three buildings forming a row along the High Street. The buildings date back to the 18th century, with later alterations. The frontages of numbers 40 and 41 are finished with scribed cement render, while number 42 has painted pebbledash. The plinths are constructed from rubble, brick, and weatherboard. The roofs are slate, with wide boarded eaves and brick chimney stacks; a modern verge is present at the rear of number 42. Number 42 is slightly set back from numbers 40 and 41. The windows are small-pane sashes with flush frames, featuring 12 panes on the first floor and 16 panes below. A 9-pane window sits above the low carriage entry between numbers 40 and 41, with a square headed design on the front and a segmental arched design on the rear. The doors are 6-panel, with partial glazing on number 42. The left gable end of the building is slate-hung. The passage leading alongside the buildings has a rubble base and weatherboarding up to half its height; the original building depth is indicated by the extent of this weatherboarding, with the rear portion being a full-height rubble wall.
A two-storey modern extension has been built at the rear of number 40, replacing an earlier brick cottage. The remainder of the rear elevation is rubble with brick dressings. Numbers 41 and 42 have three windows, with lean-to and modern casement windows to number 41 and some small-pane metal frame casement windows and a lean-to porch to number 42.
Internal features include evidence of earlier roof pitches and a blocked opening in the room above the passage in number 40. The earlier timberwork is oak, while later work is pine. Number 41 has an 18th-century roof with overlapping purlins, and the central truss was once used as a partition. The ground floor of number 41 has timber frame partitions, and number 42 features chamfered beams. A handrail sweeps up to the top of the staircase with a balustrade.
