Description

40 High Street comprises three properties, Nos. 40, 41, and 42, originally a building of three bays. Nos. 40 and 41 have frontages rendered with scribed cement, while No. 42 has a painted pebbledash finish. The plinths are of rubble, brick, and weatherboard. The roofs are slate, with wide boarded eaves and red brick chimney stacks, with a modern rear verge to No. 42. No. 42 is slightly set back from Nos. 40 and 41. The windows are small-pane sashes with flush frames: 12-pane to the first floor and 16-pane below. A 9-pane window is located above the low carriage entry between Nos. 40 and 41, with a square headed design to the front and a segmental arched design to the rear. The doors are six-panel, with part-glazing to No. 42. The left gable end of the building is slate hung. The passage has a rubble base and is weatherboarded to half its height, revealing the original building depth; the rear section is full-height rubble walled.

A two-storey modern extension has been built at the rear of No. 40, replacing an earlier brick cottage. The remainder of the rear elevation is of rubble with brick dressings. Nos. 41 and 42 have three windows, and incorporate lean-to and modern casement windows; some small-pane metal frame casement windows are also present in No. 42, together with a lean-to porch.

Inside No. 40, the room above the passage demonstrates evidence of earlier roof pitches and a blocked opening. Original timberwork is of oak, with later work in pine. The roof in No. 41 is of the 18th century type, featuring overlapping s.purlins, and the central truss was formerly a partition. The ground floor of No. 41 has timber frame partitions, and a handrail sweeps up to the top of the staircase with a balustrade. No. 42 contains chamfered beams.
