Description

The Castle Malgwyn Hotel is a country house dating to circa 1795, originally built for Sir Benjamin Hammet and linked to the tin-plate works that were formerly located on the site of the present stables. The house is constructed of rubble stone, originally roughcast, with slate hipped roofs and Cilgerran stone corniced end wall stacks.

The main front has a large five-window facade over three storeys. The upper windows have six panes, the first floor windows have twelve panes, and the ground floor windows are horizontally-barred sashes. A large arched doorway is centrally placed within a plain stucco surround. The windows have red brick heads and slate sills. A slate step leads to 20th-century double doors and a fanlight. A single-storey hotel addition from the later 20th century extends to the left.

The rear of the house features parallel hipped roofs, with an arched stairwell light on the south end wall and a single-window range on the north end. Two parallel rear wings extend from the main building. The L-plan southwest rear wing includes a courtyard infilling at ground floor level, with two stone ridge stacks on the main range and one on the southwest return. The northwest rear range has a half-hipped west end with an end stack and a two-storey north elevation featuring a range of approximately eight windows, most of which are twelve-pane sashes.

The interior has been extensively modernised. The broad central hall has an elliptical arch and fanlight at the west end. A plain, broad staircase rises to the south, consisting of two flights with iron balusters. One front room on the southwest side retains a late 18th-century white marble chimney piece, featuring tapering pilasters, festoons, and a central depiction of addorsed birds.
