Description
The gatepiers and gates to Castle Malgwyn Hotel were built between 1844 and 1845. They are made from cut Cilgerran stone and feature large main piers, each with a gate attached. The northern pier retains a pedestrian gate and is followed by a lower outer pier, which connects to a curving rubble wall leading to the roadside. The southern pier has been relocated further south, with a short length of wall linking it to a roadside pier.
The main piers have plinths, attached rusticated pilasters, and an entablature on the main eastern and western sides. The entablature projects forward over the pilasters, which frame a recessed arched niche with moulded imposts that are interrupted for the pilasters but continue around the inner face of each pier. The caps of the piers are plain. The niches on the western side are flat-backed, while those on the front are curved in plan. The outer sides of the piers are also broken forward with a rusticated pier that matches the one on the surviving outer gatepiers to the north.
The gates are large iron structures featuring spearheads, dog-bars, and a scrolled mid-rail. There is a similar pedestrian gate on the northern pier, which is rusticated with a moulded cornice and plinth. A rubble stone wall curves northeast to the outer plain pier. To the south of the southern main pier, only a short length of rebuilt wall connects to the outer end pier.
