Description

Yr Hen Gapel is an Independent Chapel built in 1830, featuring a rendered front and a slate hipped roof. The front has plain square-headed openings that include two long windows at the center, two doors, and two long gallery windows above. The doors and center windows are adorned with stucco pilasters and moulded arches, while the gallery windows have raised surrounds. A painted slate diamond plaque in the center reads, "Llechryd Chapel was built in the year 1709 and rebuilt in the year 1830." The doors are 20th-century framed ledged types with overlights and early 20th-century plain glazing. The south wall is made of rubble stone and includes a 6-pane sash window on each floor. Attached to the northeast corner is an altered 19th-century two-storey chapel house with three windows, also made of rubble stone.

The front retaining wall, made of Cilgerran stone from the 19th century, features slim monolith gatepiers that are pyramid-capped, along with a coped wall topped with low spearhead rails and intermediate spearheads on each side. The end piers are larger and made of cut stone, also pyramid-capped. The entrance is marked by double iron gates.

Inside, the chapel contains grained box pews from 1830, some of which incorporate reused elements from the earlier chapel, including one seat-back inscribed with "Coedmore Seat 1709." The five-sided gallery is supported by four marbled timber columns and features a bracketed cornice and a panelled front. There is a clock made by D Jenkins of Cardigan from 1839. The ceiling has later plain ornamentation with ribs and a central rose. The pulpit, from the later 19th century, features a plaster arched aedicule behind it and a grand seat with balustrading.
