Description

The Stables is a building dating from the early 18th century, constructed from finely cut Cilgerran stone in long rectangular blocks, with slate roofs. The building exhibits a castellated style, with a prominent, tall entrance tower situated off-centre on the east front. This tower features a rusticated arch with impost bands and a keystone, along with large panelled timber gates. Above are two 20th-century timber mullion and transom windows, a moulded cornice, and a large stepped gable housing a slate clock face. Similar stepped gables are present on either side of the tower, topped with a truncated pyramid slate roof and a tall, octagonal, timber-domed lantern. To the left of the tower is a single bay with a small stepped gable and a 20th-century window. To the right are two stepped gables, incorporating vent loops and four 20th-century windows.

The south side of the building features large stepped gables at each end and two smaller stepped gables in between, also with vent loops. Two original mullioned windows are located on the left. A ridge stack is present. The west side of the building displays three stepped gables with vent loops. In the northwest angle, a two-storey range with a parapet incorporates three arched ground floor windows and two upper windows using 20th-century plastic glazing. An octagonal turret, recessed within the angle to the north, features slate angle piers, metal louvres, and a slate ogee dome. The north front, overlooking the river, has two small stepped gables with vent loops, three sets of two loops along the main wall, and a larger stepped gable to the left end.

The courtyard has been altered with the insertion of 20th-century windows. The east range mirrors the tower’s rear elevation, including a single arched door and 20th-century windows. The south range features a 20th-century door and windows, full-height ledged doors, a door with an overlight flanked by a pair of casement windows, and a further door at the right end with a stone dormer gable housing a timber cross-window. The north range includes four full-height carriage entries with ledged double doors, a 20th-century window and door to the right. The northwest range has a parapet and a three-window range of plastic windows simulating nine-pane upper sashes and twelve-pane lower sashes. The octagonal turret is positioned to the right. The west range displays a 20th-century door and window in a former broad opening, a vent loop, double ledged doors, and a door with an overlight. A ridge chimney is present.

In front of the east front are two large, corniced gate piers with ball finials.
