Description
Giltar Lodge is a mid-19th century villa that likely incorporates earlier elements, particularly in the rear wing facing west towards the street. This wing may be linked to a property listed in the 1841 Tithe Survey, owned by Charles Cooke Wells. The house was significantly altered to create a two-storey structure facing south, likely after the railway opened in 1863, as it was positioned on the main route from the village to the station. Originally, there was a central entrance on the street-facing wing, which has since been blocked and replaced with a section of Art Nouveau railings.
The building features roughcast on all sides and has a hipped roof with deep eaves, covered in artificial slates. The front elevation includes rusticated quoins at the corners. There are three windows across the front, with a prominent gable-roofed centre bay that projects over a large open porch supported by two Tuscan columns and antae. The porch displays beams with pendant ornamentation. The main entrance door consists of four panels, flanked by smaller windows. All front windows have moulded architraves and sills with brackets, while the ground floor windows are topped with entablature hoods. The windows are recessed, featuring large four-pane sash designs. The side windows facing the village street are smaller, simpler 12-pane windows. The east elevation, which faces the sea, boasts a full-height bay window.
Giltar Lodge is recognized as a notable example of a mid-Victorian villa, reflecting the development of the Tenby area as a seaside resort during the railway era.
