Description

The Cottage is a large house from the early to mid-19th century that originally started as a cottage. The kitchen quarters at the rear of the house still reflect this origin, as their floor level is higher than that of the main part of the house. In 1841, the owner was Charles Cooke Wells, who owned several properties in Penally, and this house was still referred to as a cottage, suggesting that Wells may have converted it.

The house is two storeys tall and has three windows facing east to take advantage of the view of Carmarthen Bay. It features rendered stonework that is now painted pink and has a slate roof with a deep eaves overhang and tile ridges. Modern brick chimneys are present. At the front, there is a full-width verandah supported by eight timber columns and topped with a flat roof. The windows are hornless 12-pane sash types set under segmental arches. To the right, there is a late-19th century bay that includes French windows with margin lights. The front door is semi-glazed, featuring nine panes above the mid-rail and two sunk panels below.

The Cottage is listed as a well-preserved example of an early or mid-19th century house, maintaining its Regency character.
