Description

The Former Church of Saint Mary is a Grade II* listed building featuring rubble stone construction and slate roofs. It includes a nave, a whitewashed rendered chancel, a 19th-century north porch, a north transept with a squint, a southeast tower with a recessed stone spire, and a disused south porch. The nave has a 19th-century fishscale slate eaves roof and a 19th-century two-light west window with a quatrefoil in the head. The south side is whitewashed and has a slate plaque dedicated to G Phelps, who died in 1803. The north porch features a pointed doorway and a plain pointed medieval inner doorway. The south porch has a 19th-century eaves roof and a blocked rough stone pointed south doorway. The tower at the southeast end of the nave has a corbelled parapet and narrow lancet bell openings, topped with a recessed octagonal spire. There is a 19th-century two-light south window. The north transept contains a rare red carved inscription stone at the northeast angle, commemorating its rebuilding by Rudolph Benegar, rector, in 1342. It also has a two-light flat-headed window and a plaque on the west side dedicated to ReváAáBoye, who died in 1704. The squint features a flat-headed two-light window, while the chancel has a three-light 19th-century east window.

The north transept has a 19th-century roof and a plastered arch leading to the nave, but the fittings have been removed, including the font and memorials, which have been relocated to Rhoscrowther Church.
