Description
The building is a church hall, originally constructed in 1851 as a National School. It is made of rubble stone and features a steep gabled slate roof with fish-scale slates. The northeast end has a stack with a chamfered shaft and a corniced cap. The hall is a single storey with a one-room plan, and the east front has a gabled stone porch that leads to a camber-headed doorway. This porch has a deep eaved roof, an ashlar pointed-arched doorway with a brass plaque above, and a small doorway on the north side.
The main schoolroom includes a plinth, rock-faced angle quoins, and flush ashlar traceried windows. There is a long three-light flat-headed window on the south end featuring cusped ogee tracery, as well as two three-light windows on the west side with shouldered heads. All windows are fitted with iron casements and fixed lights that contain hexagonal main panes. The north end has a low gabled projection with a door.
Inside, the hall consists of a single room with a fireplace at the north end, which is slate and currently missing its shelf. The roof is supported by three arch-braced collar trusses, and there are two six-panel doors at the north end—one leading to a cupboard and the other to the northern section. The south end window contains stained glass in its small upper lights, dated 1851, and displays two coats of arms. The stonework also features the inscribed names of the founders, Kimberledge of Kilpayson and Rev Scott, Rector.
