Description
5 Main Street is an attached house with colourwashed roughcast cladding, a slate roof, and a brick stack with nogged brick capping on the right. The building is three stories tall and has a two-window range that is offset to the left. The attic features small 6-pane sash windows located under the eaves, positioned directly above two tall first-floor 12-pane sash windows. There is a doorway to the left on the ground floor, with paired 12-pane sash windows to the right. A shallow vent for the basement and a 3-pane top-hinged light are also present. The entrance is highlighted by a fine classical doorcase with three-quarter Ionic columns, a pulvinated frieze, and a pediment adorned with dentils. Inside, the door reveals are panelled, and there is a four-panelled door with an overlight featuring metal tracery. The roof was covered with cemented slates in 1978.
The entrance hall is located to the side of the front room and features a Greek-key ceiling border along with an acanthus-leaf ceiling rose. There is a panelled elliptical arch leading to the stair-hall, where the stairs run at right angles with a single flight to the landing. The staircase has stick balusters, a tapered square newel, and a closed string. The front room has a ceiling border similar to that of the hall, while the rear room features a foliage and fruit pattern border and a 19th-century iron grate. The basement has a blocked door on the street front, and the first floor has six-panel doors.
