Description

This is a two-storey house of the early 19th century, originally part of a pair, now consisting of number 7 and the formerly attached number 9. The house is faced in painted stucco and has a slate roof with bracketed eaves and substantial brick end stacks, the right-hand stack being particularly large with nine shafts. The front has a three-window range; the windows are 12-pane sashes, though not quite evenly spaced, with the ground floor left having a 16-pane sash window. The doorway is slightly to the right of centre and does not align with the window above, featuring a semi-elliptical head. A flight of three steps leads to an eight-panelled door, comprising four fielded panels and a fanlight with radiating tracery.

To the right, a set of 11 slate steps descends past a 12-pane sash window to a basement and souterrain, accessible by semi-circular headed ledged doors—one straight ahead and one to the right—leading to a cellar. Victorian iron railings are present alongside the steps. The rear wall reveals a full-height basement. Since 1978, number 7 has been used as a private dwelling.

Significant original early 19th-century details remain. The right-hand room has panelled shutters with rebated corners to the mouldings. The left room retains a simple ceiling rose and an infilled triple arch feature between the front and rear rooms, formed by a broad, flattened arch flanked by two arches with undercut plaster mouldings, supported by four short columns which rise to dado level. The staircase has scrolled tread ends, and the hall passage features a plaster cross vault with elliptical arches at each end.
