Description

8 Westgate Hill is a house raised above the roadway on bedrock, constructed of rubble stone with a close-eaved slate roof. It has two storeys and is roughly four bays wide, with the front wall recessed to the right and featuring corbelling above. The centre right doorway is accessed by steps that rise laterally from the street. The windows are modern leaded casements with stone voussoirs, and they are longer than those depicted in an 1881 view. From left to right, there is a pair of casements on the ground floor with a triple casement above, a second pair of casements on the ground floor at a slightly higher level, a pair of casements above a pointed chamfered medieval doorway that has broach stops and a 20th-century plank door, and finally, below the corbelling, a high segmental arch with stone voussoirs leading to a former passageway to The Parade, which has been filled in and now features a segmental arched triple window. The 1881 view shows a window above the corbelling and two storeys under the arch, both with mullioned windows. The rear wall has a 20th-century lateral chimney. To the right, there was a small lancet that is now blocked, and to the left, there is a wide relieving arch above a 20th-century window, likely corresponding to the arch in the front wall. The interior has been renewed, with a fireplace located on the rear wall of the left room.
