Description
Bryn Hall is a house built of roughly coursed local rubble, topped with a slate roof. It has three storeys and a cellar, with the main front dating from the early 19th century featuring three bays. The central entrance has a six-fielded panelled door with a seven-pane overlight, flanked by full-height glazed French windows that open inwards, likely from the early 20th century. On the first floor, there are 12-pane sash windows, while the second floor has 9-pane single-hung sashes positioned directly below the boxed eaves. At the rear, there is a gabled wing.
To the right of the front elevation, set back, is a service wing that was added or completely reworked in the early 20th century by Sir John Bradford in an Edwardian style. This wing extends to the north as a kitchen wing, enclosing a small open service yard. The rear of the yard features three 12-pane sash windows, likely from the early 19th century, and above them is a square oriel bay window supported by cut timber corbel brackets, topped with a shallow gable that extends to the rear. There is also an extruded glazed corner on the return wing.
Inside, the front entrance leads across the end of a living hall to a cross passage that contains the staircase. To the right is a smaller parlour. The staircase is a remarkable dog-leg design from around 1700, notable for its lack of newels and featuring turned balusters on wreathed urns, elaborate tread brackets, and a wreathed handrail that is scrolled at the foot. This oak staircase, possibly with mahogany elements, rises through all three floors and has an entrance feature at the bottom with shallow keyed arches that are scrolled at the ends.
