Description
This is a Grade II listed war memorial, designed in the form of a Cenotaph and made of silver granite. The granite is primarily rough hammer-dressed, with smooth granite used for the main sections, including the lettering and the top catafalque. The memorial features three stone steps leading up to a plinth composed of two steps, the upper one adorned with a double moulding in smooth granite.
The main part of the memorial has diminishing stages similar to the London Cenotaph, with raised angle piers. The names of those commemorated from St. Mary's parish are inscribed on the south side, while those from St. Michael's parish are on the north side. The narrower east front includes commemorative text, and the rear west side lists names from Monkton.
Above this, there is a large hammer-dressed block with a carved stone wreath on the front, flanked by two shorter inset blocks, the top of which has a moulded upper edge. The top catafalque consists of smooth rectangular blocks, with each face standing proud of the hammer-dressed set-back corners, finished with a moulded flat cap and a hammer-dressed set-back top stone. Additionally, grey granite plaques have been added to the base, listing names from the Second World War.
