Description

Narbeth Castle is a rectangular site featuring a half-moon outwork that covers the southern front. The ruins include two quarter-engaged drum towers with battered bases. The southeast tower, which served as a bakehouse and chapel tower, has an aumbry at the first storey and a window opening at the second storey. The southwest tower remains intact up to three storeys, containing a larder with two chambers above. The second floor openings feature pointed arches, while the ground floor openings have broad internal splays. To the north, a fragment of wall rises to the first storey height, indicating the former kitchens with a hall above. The ground floor has cambered openings that have been modernly blocked, and there are traces of arched openings at the first floor level, along with corbels.

On the west side of the enclosure, there are remnants of a curtain wall with two semicircular bastions, one of which includes a drain.

To the east, there is a vaulted cellar with three openings, the center of which has been enlarged to form a doorway. The original door is located at the southern end but has undergone modern alterations. A section of wall above shows evidence of a window that once belonged to the great chamber.

Also on the east side, there are remains of a tower with a battered base below the stringcourse. Evidence suggests the presence of two garderobes with chutes at the angle of the curtain, as well as flues leading to the first and second floors, with a buttery and two chambers above.

The site of the Great Tower, along with its forebuilding and adjoining gatehouse, is located at the northern end of the site but is obscured. The castle is designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
