Description

The monument at Hean Castle is a Tuscan column that commemorates Lady Anne, who died in 1902, and was the wife of Sir William Thomas Lewis, the 1st Baron Merthyr. Lady Lewis is also remembered in the east window of St Issell's Church, where her portrait is displayed. The inscription on the monument indicates that she came from a family well-known in the South Wales steam-coal trade.

This freestanding column has a diameter of about 0.6 meters and is approximately seven times its diameter in height. It features an Attic base, all made of polished red granite. The column stands on a limestone base, which includes a block with the inscription on the east side, set on a plinth and three rock-faced steps.
