Description

7 The Norton is a mid-terrace house that resembles Nos 5, 6, and 8, but it is the least altered, retaining its original late Georgian form. The street-facing elevation is painted roughcast and consists of four storeys with two bays, featuring a close-eaved slate roof and red brick chimney stacks. The third floor has small hornless 6-pane sash windows, while the other floors have large hornless 12-pane sashes. To the left, there is a round-headed doorway that is not aligned with the windows above. This doorway has a painted timber doorcase with a dentilled open-pediment on short entablature blocks supported by console brackets above thin applied fluted pilasters. An impost band is present in the reveals, and there is a plain fanlight above the 6-panelled door, which has a central seam, four raised and fielded panels, and two flush panels. The entrance is accessed by two steps.

Inside, the house features an excellent little altered high-status Regency interior. The staircase has turned newels, and there are many 6-panelled doors within doorcases that have reeded surrounds, some with panelled reveals. The cornices display an undercut leaf motif and acanthus decoration. On the ground and first floors, the front and back rooms are connected by broad elliptical-arched openings with sliding panelled doors, and there are folding panelled shutters at the windows.
