Description

High Seas is a terraced house that resembles No 7 and dates from the Regency period. It features painted stucco that mimics masonry, a close-eaved slate roof, and red brick end stacks. The building has four storeys and two bays. The third floor has smaller 9-pane hornless sash windows, while the first and second floors have hornless 12-pane sashes, and the ground floor to the right has a hornless 16-pane sash window. To the left, there is a round-headed wooden doorway within a painted timber doorcase that has an open pediment on entablature blocks. This is flanked by narrow fluted pilasters under curved consoles, and a moulded impost band runs around the reveals and beneath the fanlight. The entrance features a six-panelled door with four raised and fielded panels and two flush panels. The rear elevation was slate hung in 1977.

Despite some alterations on the ground floor, the house retains a high-status Regency interior. The staircase has turned newels and stick balusters. Panelled doors are set in doorcases with reeded surrounds, some of which have panelled reveals. The cornices display an undercut leaf motif and floral decoration. On the ground and first floors, the front and back rooms are connected by a broad elliptical-arched opening, with the first floor retaining its decorative treatment and sliding panelled doors. The upper floors maintain much of their period detailing, albeit in a simpler style.
