Description

This building is one of a pair of early 19th century cottages made from rubble stone, featuring a whitewashed, slate-hung front and a grouted slate roof. The cottages have an east end stack and a truncated west stack. Each cottage is two stories high with three windows and a whitewashed rubble plinth at ground floor sill level. Originally, they had four-pane sash windows with slate sills and a central door for each. However, the windows in the two central bays have been widened in the 20th century, and the slate-hanging has been imitated in render. The left cottage includes a tall lean-to on the west end and a 12-pane sash window above the front door, while the right cottage has two-pane windows on the upper floor to the center and right. There is one large brick stack on the rear roof slope and two rear doors.

Despite the alterations, this pair of cottages, along with the adjoining No. 30, are significant as they are among the last examples of the colourwashed, slate-hung facades that were once common in Solva. They are also notable as part of the prominent cliff-top group of houses in Pen-yr-Aber, which are depicted in views of Solva from the estuary.
