Description
The Malthouse Kiln, which includes the B & D Joinery Warehouse, is a 3-storey building constructed from coursed colourwashed rubble and features a slate roof. The street-facing side has a two-window layout, with the left bay projecting and gable-ended, complete with a gabled canopy for a hoist. The building has voussoir lintels, pivot windows, boarded doors, and one part-glazed door on the first floor to the left. There are also boarded-up casement windows on the side.
At the rear, there is a fine malt-drying kiln, which is a rare and well-preserved example of its type. This kiln is set on a high square rubble base with iron brace plates, and it features a conical brick chimney that rises above, although the cowl is missing and it is finished with twin cement rendering.
Inside the warehouse, there are pegged king post trusses, which are typical of the period, along with cast iron columns and stop-chamfered tie beams. Access to the kiln is through a small narrow arched opening with boarded doors. Notably, the kiln retains its original perforated tile floor, making it particularly special.
