Description

The U-Plan Coach House and Stable Range at Llanerchaeron, previously listed as situated at Llanaeron House, is a coach house with stables arranged around a three-sided courtyard that opens to the north. It features colourwashed rubble construction with slate roofs, which are hipped at the outer angles and ends of the wings. The roof of the eastern wing has been replaced with corrugated asbestos and includes a brick chimney stack on the south side.

The central south range contains a taller lofted coach house with a triple arcade at the front, showcasing tall round-headed arches made of stone voussoirs and paired planked doors. Each side of the arcade has a four-panel door in the returns of the single-storey wings, which have cambered stone voussoired heads. At the rear, there is a detached stone stair leading to the loft, which is currently used as a fruit store. The loft door features a gable that breaks the eaves.

The matching wings include a west wing, most of which has collapsed, and a five-bay courtyard front. The eastern wing has, from north to south, a series of windows: W.D.W.D.W.D. The outer windows are 2-light 12-pane casements, while the central window is a wider 4-light 24-pane casement. There are six-panel doors, with a lower four-panel door to the right. All openings have cambered stone voussoired heads and stone sills. The three northern bays of the west range remain and feature similar openings. Each end of the wings has a blank round-arched recess, with the eastern recess displaying painted glazing bars. The eastern side of the eastern wing has a small mounting block towards the north end, along with a window featuring a cambered stone voussoired head and three small rectangular recesses. The rear wall of the wing has a blocked door and a 6-pane window, with heads matching those of the other openings. Behind the remaining west wing, there is an added W.C. and a pitched stone forecourt.

At the rear, there is a small added square courtyard that abuts the garden wall. In the northwest corner, a small pit with slate steps contains a brick-lined furnace, which heated underground flues for the nearby nursery beds and cloche, a late 19th-century arrangement.

The coach house has a 4-bay collar-truss roof with rough trusses and collars, paired purlins, and iron staples and bolts. The loft is used as a fruit store, and there are cast iron fittings in the stable. The building is in poor condition as of summer 1995.
