Description
The Cliff Railway, which includes the Upper and Lower Stations, features a 2-storey Cliff Railway House that is built into the slope. The front is made of red brick with painted dressings and has four windows. It has a hipped slate roof and brick chimney stacks on either side of a central cross gable, which has a pediment. There is a datestone at the center, and the corners have pediments with splayed one-window designs. A parapet with ball finials sits above the cornice and pilaster strips, which end just below the first-floor cornice. The windows are horned sash types with cills and keystones, while the ground floor has arched openings that are broader at the central main entrance, which features panelled doors. The side elevations have both sash and casement windows, and the rear has sash windows with a central splayed bay.
The lower station has red brick walls that rise along the stepped platforms. Twin railway tracks are set into a cutting with concrete banks and diverge at a crossing point. Three out of four timber bridges are still in place. At the upper end, concrete walls lead to the stepped platforms, which connect to the upper station that has a corrugated roof and a boarded valence at the front.
