Description
Abergeldie is a row of reduced Gothic buildings dating from the 18th century, originally four storeys high with attics and basements (except for the northernmost building, Balmoral, which lacks a basement). Two of the buildings have been combined to form the Sea Bank Hotel. The facades vary in width, with four windows to the Sea Bank, two windows to the Clarendon Hotel, Queensbridge Hotel, and Blaenwern. The end two houses, Abergeldie and Balmoral, have elevations of snecked rubble, similar to the southern end of the terrace; Balmoral has been incorporated into Alexandra Hall of Residence. The buildings are faced with bull-nosed rubble and freestone banding, with most fronts colourwashed. They have slate roofs, brick chimney stacks, and moulded eaves. Pitched roof dormers are present, some featuring ornamental timberwork. Modern glazing is found at Queensbridge and Sea Bank Hotels; otherwise, there are sash windows set in stilted headed recesses. The third-floor windows are grouped in alternating pairs and threes. Splayed three-storey bay windows are positioned below the entrances, featuring cylindrical columns with annulettes and some dentil cornices. The Queensbridge and Clarendon Hotels have Gothic trefoil punched aprons. A modern ground floor loggia is incorporated into the Sea Bank Hotel; the other buildings have arched entrances topped with uncarved headstops and a fanlight over modern doors.
