Description

Y Wern Independent Chapel is an 18th-century building, constructed of unpainted stucco lined to resemble ashlar, with a slate roof and bracketed eaves. The chapel has a lateral facade featuring raised quoins, arched windows with small panes and radiating bar heads, and doors with traceried overlights. The design includes two long central windows, two slightly shorter gallery windows above two four-panel doors, all set within raised surrounds with incised voussoirs. The doors also feature similar raised heads with incised voussoir lines. A slate plinth runs along the base.

A vestry is attached to the left-hand end, with a lean-to porch leading to a first-floor room. There is also a blocked coach entry in the end wall. A forecourt fronts the chapel, featuring a cobbled triangular central strip, low rubble outer walls, spearhead iron rails, and dog-bars. The entrance is marked by two square stone gatepiers, capped with pyramids and ball finials, and matching spearhead iron gates.

The interior is attractive, with a white-painted three-sided gallery featuring pierced iron panels and pilasters with rosettes between the panels. The chapel retains box pews, grained on the outside and painted within, a curved panelled great seat, a canted pulpit front with fretwork panels, and globe gas lights. The ceiling is plastered and features a central rose.
