Description
Tyddyn Hen, located at Plas y Wern, is a building that has undergone significant alterations during its conversion into a house. Originally constructed with whitewashed rubble stone and a thatched roof, it now features exposed rubble walls with a slate eaves roof and a small stone stack at the northern end. The walls are battered at the base. The building is one storey high, with a central door and a window to the right, which was originally a door and now has a single long rough log above, possibly an applied feature. There is a 20th-century addition at the northwest angle, and the rear wall has two 20th-century triple casements with rough log lintels; the wall was originally windowless.
To the right of the door, there is a cruck truss that has one full-length blade on the entrance side and one raised blade in the rear wall, set into the stonework about 0.5 meters below the wall head. The blades have chamfered edges. There are two additional trusses from 1987, which are lightweight and feature nailed or bolted thin ties and pegged collars, along with double purlins. Previously, the floors were cobbled. While there is no evidence of an original chimney, the cruck truss and purlins show signs of having been smoke-blackened.
