Description

The Vicarage is a large, two-story house dating from the High Victorian Gothic period. It is constructed of sandstone squared rubble with tooled dressings, covered by slate roofs and featuring prominent stone stacks. The building has a complex, asymmetrical design with a rectangular overall plan. The front (south) elevation has a short section with a gabled projection to the right and a canted bay to the left. The west side shows the gable of the south front to the right and a long roofline running north, parallel to an east range.

A chamfered plinth and a moulded band at first floor level define the exterior. Small-paned sash windows are set in segmental pointed frames with stone voussoirs on the ground floor, and flat-headed frames with ashlar lintels above. All windows have chamfering to their lintels and upper jambs, and flush stone sills.

The south front is white-painted, with a projecting gable to the right containing two 12-pane sashes on the ground floor and one above, the upper window recessed under a Gothic blank arch with a hoodmould. A two-story canted bay with a hipped roof is to the right, featuring 4, 12, and 4-pane sashes below and 3, 9, and 3-pane sashes above. An external chimneybreast on the west end has set-offs at ground floor and within the gable, topped by a chamfered ashlar cap. This gable is also painted. A smaller, lower porch gable, also painted, is adjoining, with a recessed first-floor 9-pane sash beneath a blank Gothic tympanum containing a cinquefoil blank roundel. A six-panel door is below, set in a chamfered pointed surround with a 3-pane overlight. The remaining west range is slightly set back and features another ashlar stack on the ridge, with a battered base and chamfered cap. Two widely spaced 9-pane sashes are on the first floor above a 12-pane window to the ground floor right and a pair of 8-pane sashes to the ground floor left. The north end gable has two ground floor 8-pane sashes.

The east side presents a long, balanced, asymmetrical facade, with an eaves gable over a long 18-pane stair light, positioned under a recessed Gothic ashlar tympanum with trefoil cusping – the moulded band drops below the sill here. Two small 2-pane windows are located on the ground floor beneath. The gable is slightly advanced, topped by an iron apex finial. To the left is a fine wall-face stack, battered and with two set-offs, and just one ground-floor window with four panes, positioned near the central projection. To the right is a 9-pane sash on the first floor over two ground floor 12-pane sashes. A rendered north stack is also present. A lean-to addition extends from the north end against the east side of the longer west range. On the east side is a 12-pane sash; on the north end, an 8-pane sash and a door, both within segmental-pointed surrounds.

A screen wall runs from the northwest angle to a service court, enclosed by high rubble walls and two large ashlar gatepiers featuring a plinth, a mid-height string course, and tall pyramid caps.
