Description

12 Water Street is part of a group of simple classical buildings dating from the 19th century, featuring two-storey fronts with scribed render, except for No 12, which is finished in pebbledash. The buildings have rusticated quoins, end pilaster strips, cill bands, and plinths. The front of Nos 8, 9, and 10 is asymmetrical, with No 8 having a 2 + 2-window arrangement, while Nos 9 and 10 have 2 + 1-windows. Nos 11 to 14 each have three-window fronts. The roofs are slate with wide boarded eaves and there are eight cement render chimney stacks.

The windows vary, with 12-pane sash windows in Nos 10, 12, and 13, and 4-pane sashes in Nos 9, 11, and 14. No 8 features various sash windows, including a splayed bay window on the right, while No 10 has a later 2-pane sash on the ground floor. All windows, except for Nos 8, 9, and 10, have lugged architraves and ornamental keystones. No 13 has voussoir lintels instead of keystones. The entrances are arched with keystones, except for No 13, and Nos 8, 11, 12, and 14 have panelled architraves.

The doors are recessed and include a panelled door with an intersecting ribbed fanlight at No 8, a half-glazed door with a 6-pane fanlight at No 9, a 4-panel door with a 5-pane fanlight at No 10, a 3-panel door with a 7-pane fanlight at No 11, a boarded door with a 2-pane fanlight at No 12, an 8-panel door with a 5-pane fanlight at No 13 (which also has scribed reveals), and a 6-panel door with a 5-pane fanlight at No 14. There is also a further 4-panel door with a fanlight to the right of the bay window at No 8, along with a boarded door featuring a panelled architrave and ornamental keystone. An irregularly curved arch leads to a lane on the right.
