Description

Peniel Welsh Congregational Chapel is a building that combines mixed classical and Romanesque styles. It features a bull-nosed rubble front with Bath Stone dressings and moulded gable parapets resting on wave moulded kneelers. The central bay is advanced, forming the apex of a split gabled front. Above the entrance, there is a semi-circular headed louvred opening, with a porphy date plaque set in a stone surround, linked by a band course to rusticated quoins. Below this, there are two semi-circular headed Venetian Renaissance bipartite windows with a stringcourse cill. The entrance itself is semi-circular arched, with moulded jambs and a stringcourse hoodmould, leading to a recessed 12-panel door that has a segmental head and a roundel fanlight. The front also has two side windows, which are similar but taller than those in the centre, and feature a stringcourse cill. A plinth at the base includes carved memorial stones.

The side elevations are finished in plain cement render, while the rear is also cement rendered, featuring one louvred opening and two windows, with a date plaque above a semi-circular headed former entrance.

Inside, the chapel has a rectangular galleried layout with a ribbed flat plaster ceiling, ornate ventilation roundels, and a plain cornice. The raked gallery is steep against the front wall and supported by cast-iron columns with foliated capitals. The continuous gallery front is adorned with a band of filigree work in cast iron. Similar decorative elements can be found on the curved platform front and the pulpit set against the rear wall. Above the pulpit is an organ encased in panelled timber, situated between two stained glass windows that commemorate Rev Evans, who served as Minister from 1835 to 1896. The rear elevation faces Peniel Lane.
